If the HAL_DeviceListControl function is called with a control method, it invokes the Windows ACPI driver, Acpi.sys, to enumerate the ACPI objects that the control method describes, and then adds them to the list of object instances created from the WdfDriverCreate function. The Windows ACPI driver, Acpi.sys, creates the WdfDevice objects that are added to the list of object instances. When the list of WdfDevice objects is complete, the HAL uses the HAL_DeviceListControl function to create the WdfDevice objects in the list.
The HAL_DeviceListControl function is available for use in the kernel and as an extension to the HAL, and in user mode as an extension to the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) and the Windows Driver Foundation (WDK). For more information, see
Acpi.sys exposes the available ACPI control methods to the HAL through this function. If the HAL_DeviceListControl function is not called with a control method, Acpi.sys calls the legacy HAL function HalQueryActiveControlMethods to obtain the available ACPI control methods.
The HAL uses the WdfDevice objects to open the file descriptors that the control method specifies, and passes the handles to the WdfDriverCreate function. The WdfDriverCreate function creates a WdfDevice object for each file descriptor and adds it to the list of WdfDevice objects that are returned to the HAL. Acpi.sys maintains the following two data structures for each ACPI device in the device tree.
The IAggregateDevice structure maintains an array of DeviceInterfaces and an array of Objects . The structure also contains the global unique ID (GUID) of the aggregate device.
The IAcquireDevice structure maintains a list of connected device stacks. Each connected device stack contains a PDO for each plugged-in USB device. The structure also contains the global unique ID (GUID) of the aggregate device.
The main table in the ACPI BIOS is the System Description Table (SDT). The SDT contains all the information necessary for an ACPI BIOS to identify and respond to hardware devices. The SDT consists of the following fields, which are listed in Table 1:
