DBT uses a combination of cognitive and emotional skills training to help individuals with BPD find a way to "accept their feelings and behave in ways that they can tolerate. These skills include tolerating distressing feelings while not acting on them, alleviating impulses, building and strengthening more adaptive patterns of thinking, and learning to experience and live with emotions in their natural intensity. These skills and others are practiced in daily sessions." (DBT website, 2008) Lineshan says that while the skills part of DBT is research-based, the philosophy on which the skills are based is not. More specifically, in her mind, the emotion regulation component of DBT (i.e., the skills training component) is research-based. However, her belief is that DBT is not a therapy for the emotion regulation part of the brain (i.e., the substance of DBT). Therefore, in order to achieve happiness, people with BPD need to learn skills that will allow them to experience and tolerate their emotions, which she believes is a process that develops the parts of the brain responsible for emotion and social functioning (Linehan, 1993).
Linehan's skills training manual, Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder (DBT), was written "for clinicians and counselors intent on providing DBT as a treatment to adults."[3] One of the most important aspects of Linehan's work and DBT itself is that the manual guides clients and counselors through the gradual integration of new knowledge, skills and behaviors.
DBT's treatment model is based on the information Linehan learned from her research on borderline personality disorder and her experience in providing psychoeducational therapy for those with BPD.
According to Linehan, DBT_SM allows people who struggle with impulsivity, instability, and fear of abandonment to develop more perspective, emotional self-regulation, and a capacity for life's challenges. It is based on three principles. d2c66b5586
