By the law of privileges, about which more later on, the Lord's day in every diocese must be kept holy; because it was on the Lord's day that Christ rose from the dead and was made visible to his disciples on that day, through the fellowship which they had when they met one another after his resurrection (Col. 2:12). Therefore it is incumbent on all Christians who are obliged to keep their church on the Lord's day, to abstain from all secular labour on that day, or at least to do pious works, so that, during that day which is encompassed in Church blessings, they may honour God with their whole heart in prayers and psalms and hymns and spiritual songs of praise, and visit each other in order that, with the eyes of their souls, they may contemplate the day on which Christ offered himself for them, and may contemplate the glory of the Creator of all, who is worthy to be adored in all His works and to be desired for all His gifts.
In a thorough and careful research, conducted with the greatest precision and indispensable documents, we have enlisted all the ecclesiastical laws which bear on the preservation of holy solemnity, and caused it to be kept with religious scrupulousness. For we have found that the Church does not lack, but on the contrary, there is great abundance of legists and canonists who by their writings and treatises have most fully and on all sides instructed us in the knowledge of these laws. The most notable service that you have done us, in having encouraged and emboldened us in our endeavours to study sacred things, and in instilling into us the counsel of experienced men, is not a little appreciated by us. For in this way you have advanced the glory of the Church in our minds and the defense of the same; insomuch that, because you have been our guides in the right way, we have confidently sworn to keep the same. d2c66b5586
