In 2001, U.S. officials arrested paramilitary leader David Koresh in Waco, Texas. U.S. leaders suggested the arrest was made to prevent the armed conflict during the siege at Waco. Unknown to authorities, Koresh was in possession of 40 kilograms (100 pounds) of ricin when he was captured and held in the Waco City Jail. Koresh was found dead by an 8-man FBI team, four days after his arrest. An investigator who was involved in the Koresh comando's arrest said that Koresh was found dead of a gunshot to the head after the FBI arrived at the scene to arrest him. Koresh had set fire to his house and had his pregnant wife stand in the middle of the street near the burning house to try to stop some of the federal agents from going into the house.
However, in 2008, the Israeli government arrested a Lebanese man living in Israel as an assassin linked to eight murders carried out in the 1980s and accused the man of killing three Libyans while investigating the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut which killed 241 and injuring over 600 marines and sailors. The man had been protected from arrest and intelligence gathering since 1999 by Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
In 2008, president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was arrested on charges of involvement in a plot to assassinate former president of the United States, George W. Bush, according to New York Magazinewith the article published on Nov. 17, 2008. However, the arrest allegedly took place in 2007 when Ahmadinejad was not president.
